"The Independent" Foreign Fiction Prize Shortlist
"The Story of Blanche and Marie" by Per Olov Enqvist, translated by
Tiina Nunnally, and published by Harvill Secker, has been shortlisted for the
"Independent" newspaper's Foreign Fiction Prize (£10,000 divided
between author & translator). In total, 86 books were submitted, including two Norwegian books
-- Dag Solstad's Shyness and Dignity (tr. Sverre Lyngstad; Harvill Secker) and
Linn Ullmann's Grace (tr. Barbara Haveland; Picador)
What's New Mar 2007
The Anglo - Swedish Literary Foundation administered by the Embassy of Sweden in London, supports translations of Swedish literature into English.
The deadlines for this year's applications are Tuesday 1 May - and for the autumn - Thursday 1 November. Financial support for commissioned translations can be granted to publishers and/or translators. See also Events ASLF, Bernard Shaw.
BERNARD SHAW PRIZE
The Bernard Shaw Prize for translation from Swedish, worth £2000, is awarded every three years. The next closing date will be 31 December 2008, for translations from Swedish published in the UK in the years 2006, 2007, 2008. All genres are eligible. Applications must be submitted by publishers to the Society of Authors, 84 Drayton Gardens, London SW10 9SB.

TRANSLATION PRIZE FOR POETRY
The Times awards an annual translation prize, given by the newspaper in collaboration with The Stephen Spender Memorial Trust: The Times Stephen Spender Prize for Poetry in Translation, for translators aged 30 or under. Past judges have been Daniel Weissbort (joint founder of Modern Poetry in Translation), Alan Jenkins (Deputy Editor, TLS), Susan Bassnett (Professor of Comparative Literature, University of Warwick), Ewald Osers (poet and translator).
The closing date for entries in 2007 was 25 May. Entrants must submit a previoulsy unpublished translation of a poem from any language into English.
There are cash prizes and the best entries will be published in The Times and in booklet form.
